2022 Tax on Social Security Benefits

For Single Filers

  • If your combined income (which is your adjusted gross income plus nontaxable interest income and half of your Social Security benefits) is below $25,000, your Social Security benefits are not taxable.
  • If your combined income is between $25,000 and $34,000, up to 50% of your Social Security benefits may be taxable.
  • If your combined income is above $34,000, up to 85% of your Social Security benefits may be taxable.

For Married Filing Jointly

  • If your combined income (which is your adjusted gross income plus nontaxable interest income and half of your Social Security benefits) is below $32,000, your Social Security benefits are not taxable.
  • If your combined income is between $32,000 and $44,000, up to 50% of your Social Security benefits may be taxable.
  • If your combined income is above $44,000, up to 85% of your Social Security benefits may be taxable.
